Watch a video showing how to view the Critical Path in Microsoft Project.Ģ. If you can’t see an unbroken path running from the first to the last task then there is a missing dependency somewhere. To check the Critical Path use the Gantt Wizard to highlight the critical tasks.

In the example below it is not clear how the tasks relate to one another because not all of the task links are in place.įor example Installation of the software is not linked to Training, but installation is essential for the training to start. Ī broken critical path is the first sign that there could be a planning problem. Each task on the critical path is a critical task.

Not linking tasks - Broken Critical Path The Critical Path is the series of tasks that must finish on time for the entire project to finish on schedule.

The problem is that Microsoft Project hides the complex calculations are going on in the background and often as Project Managers we start using planning software before we know what terms like Critical Path and Float really mean. MS Project will then calculate start and end dates for each task and the critical path for the project. MS Project is designed to carry out complex calculations that Project Managers used to have to do by hand.

Microsoft Project is a powerful piece of software, but that power and complexity makes it very easy to create errors in your plan or reduce the accuracy of your planning. Overall I'm still enthusiastic about the product especially in terms of collaboration, but when you're an Microsoft partner encouraging the use of Office 365 you're often left having to explain these evolutionary flaws to customers who just want a product that works.Avoid these TOP 10 Microsoft Project mistakes! You have two related scrum style stories that would like to locate close to one and other in the first bucket. Note: The positioning here has nothing to do with waterfall or dependencies but might be solely for the purpose of aesthetics, readability.

So for tasks 1 through 5 you add task 1 then 2 and so on, but Planner adds task 2 above 1, 3 above 2 and so on. The first problem is that whilst you're working top to bottom in your proposal document, Planner adds the tasks in reverse order and provides no alternative method of adding a task to a specific position (Last, First, etc.). I created the tasks based on a proposal document from top to bottom. I just created a plan with 42 tasks and 4 buckets (somewhat similar to Agile scrum boards).

Yes this would require some thinking in terms of manual re-ordering, but at least it would provide a somewhat better experience without having to manually re-order 50 tasks. If this concept was added it would make ordering somewhat easier whereby it could order tasks in each bucket based on dependencies. Something I'd like to add to Planner thinking is the concept of Task Dependencies.
